Gamers have been gearing up for the release of Grand Theft Auto VI for months now but according to a former Rockstar developer, they could be left disappointed when it finally arrives.
When the trailer for GTA VI was released at the end of last year, it pretty much broke the internet, racking up a massive 170 million views on YouTube within the first 48 hours alone.

Fans of the action-adventure game went wild for the improved graphics, insane details and 'beautifully crafted world.'
But, in a recent interview, former Rockstar developer Obbe Vermeij said fans could be in for a rude awakening when the game drops next year.
Appearing on the YouTube channel Saninplay, Vermeij - who left the company back in 2009 - said: "I don’t think it’s gonna be wildly different from GTA 5. I think people might be a little disappointed on the first day, but it’s still gonna be the best game out there."

Longtime fans of the GTA franchise will remember the massive jumps between games.
GTA 3 saw the game switch from a top-down view to a fully realized 3D world.
The fourth game introduced us to Vice City for the first time and things leapt forward again when we got to fan favorite San Andreas in the fifth edition.
On top of this, improvements in technology have meant the gaming experience has continued to get better and better.

Vermeij doesn't believe technology has advanced enough to make the same big jump for the new release but he is optimistic about the future.
"There’s some rumors about creating new technology having to do with animation and AI and all that stuff," he said. "I think it’s time for a revolution where animation is more so AI-driven and physics-driven. If anyone is gonna make that step, it’s gonna be Rockstar."
Earlier this year, the game developer gave a much-anticipated update on when we can expect to get our hands on the latest addition to the franchise.

Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick said in a statement in May: "Our outlook reflects a narrowing of Rockstar Games' previously established window of Calendar 2025 to Fall of Calendar 2025 for Grand Theft Auto VI.
"We are highly confident that Rockstar Games will deliver an unparalleled entertainment experience, and our expectations for the commercial impact of the title continue to increase."
With delays being a frequent issue in the gaming industry currently, we can only keep our fingers crossed that it stays on track.
