Nintendo reveal seemingly confirms fans' GTA 6 price fears

No wonder it's tipped to make $1 billion in pre-orders

The gaming world imploded on April 2, 2025, and not just because Nintendo dedicated a whole hour to a Switch 2 Direct.

It seems the console wars have been reignited, with Nintendo undoubtedly lighting a fire beneath its rivals.

Even though we didn't get that all-important price tag, the big news of the day was confirmation of a Switch 2 release date, pencilled in for June 5, 2025.

Elsewhere, gamers got a peek at upcoming titles including Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza, enhanced versions of Zelda and Pokemon games, a surprise FromSoftware game exclusive to the Switch 2, as well as the long-awaited arrival of GameCube games as part of the Switch Online catalog.

There was plenty to talk about, but hidden beneath all the reveals and hype, a major concern has slipped through the cracks.

For those who were annoyed that games on the OG Switch pushed their price tag to $70, the Switch 2 is raising that bar further.

The post-Mario Kart World trailer reveals confirmed it'll cost $80 for a digital version and climb even further to a potential $90 for the physical one.

Nintendo has now revealed the Mario Kart World bundle for the Switch 2, which comes in at $499 and is $50 more than most were expecting. While it's caused some complaints because this is $150 more than what the Switch cost eight years ago, you have to remember we've come on a whole generation.

Away from Nintendo, others have pointed out this new $80 standard might as well confirm those rumors that GTA 6 will cost $100. No offence to the Switch 2, but if a cartoonish Mario Kart game is starting at $80, a AAAA title that's poised to be the biggest game of all time will definitely be coming in at more. To be honest, we wouldn't be surprised if $100 is a conservative estimation for what GTA 6 will cost.

When sharing these concerns on Reddit, one person wrote: "And as long as people keep buying games at insane prices they will continue to increase."

Someone else chimed in saying: "Nintendo fans will really pay for anything. What a garbage company."

Another added: "$90 for Mario kart is INSANE. It’s as stupid as the price of new Call of Duty games."

Others didn't seem too vexed, with someone else right concluding: "Let’s be honest, there is no price tag GTA6 will be at that people won’t buy it at."

It seems that opinions are split, with many accusing Nintendo of being 'greedy' for trying to charge more. Then again, others said Rockstar will likely see this and try to squeeze a few more dollars out of us.

With Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick saying the publisher is holding back on a release date to drum up anticipation, we don't imagine we'll be hearing about a GTA price tag anytime soon. To be honest, Take-Two was likely watching the Nintendo Direct to see how much it could potentially charge for Rockstar Games' next automotive adventure.
