Impressive Nintendo Switch 2 deal can shave hundreds off the price of your console

Of course, there's a catch

The time has come, and after years of waiting for the mythical Switch Pro while continuing to play Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, the Switch 2 is finally on the way. The OG Switch landed in 2017 and quickly earned an impressive legacy as a chart-topping console with some equally impressive games.

While it's sad that the Nintendo Switch's time in the sun is coming to an end, at least a souped-up sibling is taking the reins. Even though it was spoiled ahead of time, a January 2025 announcement from Nintendo confirmed the Switch 2 would be in our hands by the end of the year.

An April 2 showcase dedicated a whole hour to the Switch 2, showing off features like its 256GB storage and 7.9-inch screen, as well as a slew of games, including Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza, and The Duskbloods as FromSoftware's unexpected Switch 2-exclusive.

Although the Nintendo Direct didn't reveal how much the console costs, the official Nintendo site quickly confirmed the news ahead of the Switch 2's June 5 release date.

There were scenes of shock and outrage over the reveal that Mario Kart World will cost $80 (apparently $90 for a physical copy), leading to fears about that $100 GTA 6 price tag on PlayStation 5 and Xbox series.

In terms of pricing, you can nab a special Mario Kart World bundle for $499.99 USD, and considering the Switch 2 is $449.99 USD on its own, you can already make a big saving if you're thinking of playing the next Mario Kart.

Various retailers are sure to have their own deals, with GameStop already helping you shave some serious dough off your potential purchase.

If you trade in your Switch OLED and reserve a Switch 2 from GameStop, you'll get $175 credit toward Nintendo's next console. This is a reasonable boost from the store's current offer for OLEDs at $143.

For those who don't have an OLED, the standard Switch with removable Joy-Cons will net you $125 credit (up from $110), while a Switch Lite trade-in will get you $100 (up from $71.50). Added to this, GameStop Pro members will get a bonus 10% on their trade-in price.

Considering Switch games are compatible with the Switch 2, it's a deal you might want to take advantage of as you can.

Over on Reddit, some pointed out a potential problem, with you requiring your original Switch to do the data transfer over to the Switch 2. Putting those fears to rest, many in the comments said that GameStop should allow you to do the transfer in-store.

Continuing to question the deal in general, someone said: "Obviously you can generally get more selling privately, but these deals aren't terrible if you want to avoid the hassle of selling a system yourself."

Another added: "I'll be doing this. Bye bye switch. You did well."

Warning against it, someone else concluded: "I wish I would have never sold my NES, Genesis, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, PS3, Xbox, Xbox 360, Wii and who the hell knows what else. Keep it. Trust me. I'm slowly buying it back and it sucks."

Opinions are split on whether we should be dashing to GameStop in search of a Switch 2, but if your faithful Switch is sitting there and is just gathering dust, it could be something to consider.
