Tesla owners share how much it costs to fully charge their vehicles and how much they save on gas

Tesla owners have taken to Reddit to compare prices.

Tesla may be one of the biggest name in cars right now, as Elon Musk continues to cover multiple tech companies.

But while Tesla may have had their fair share of problems, such as one cybertruck being stuck on a beach, one prominent issue for those who actually own a Tesla is the matter of car power. As in, how much it costs to actually charge up their vehicle.

In the subreddit r/TeslaModel3, one Reddit user named Water-Shark7 asked “How much does it cost you to fully charge your tesla? I’m thinking of selling my car each gallon of premium is over $5 here in California.”

Many fellow Reddit users and Tesla owners responded, including one named RBRTF, who claims to have a 2023 Model 3 Long Range and “charge at home, and I am on a TOU plan with SDG&E so charging at “super off-peak hours” today from 30% to 90% cost me about $5.”

As for other Tesla owners, answers of how much they spent charging ranged from “About $6 for 0-100%” to just simply “$0.”

A lot of people actually seemed to save money, with one user claiming to have saved “$1860 or so this year alone.”

Another user, Ravingraven21, added that it “Depends on price of electricity. Use 280-300wH per mile, so about 3.3 to 3.5 miles per kWh.”

Certain times appeared better in terms of savings than others. For one user admits, “I ordered my 2022 Tesla M3SR right after finished our solar installation. Too bad so much rain this winter. April 2023 is the best number so far. With home usage and charge my m3, I still have about $15 credit. I drive about 900 miles a month. Charge my car to 100% once every 5-6 days.”

Another also added that “Depends on the time of day for me. But I have cut my gas bill in half.”

This isn't the first time that Tesla owners have been vocal about how much money they're saving with an EV - At the start of this year, one man took to X to share his car's first electric bill in 12 months, and the price was shocking.

Sharing a screenshot of an invoice email, the total amount was only $2.37.

Some discouraged the original poster from selling their Tesla, such as u/start3ch: “Honestly can’t recommend switching just for the sake of saving money. I have SCE, drive 7k miles per year, and since electric is nearly 40 cents per kwh, I only save like $20/month. And insurance costs a lot more than other cars.

“In the long term you’ll save money due to having fewer repairs, but I switched from a hybrid that got 40mpg, and operating costs have been pretty similar for me.

“If you have a high performance car, and want to have that same amount of performance for cheaper, then yes, it’s absolutely worth it.”

Tesla vehicles continue to sell, with reports stating that 498,000 were sold in the US in 2023, just slightly down from the company’s most successful year, 2022, which saw 536,069 sold.
