Underground tunnel built only for Tesla cars has baffled the internet

Underground tunnel built only for Tesla cars has baffled the internet

This probably isn't one for people who get claustrophobic.

You might be used to seeing Teslas driving out in the world, but did you know about an underground tunnel exclusively for Elon Musk's cars?

A tunnel beneath Las Vegas uses Tesla cars to transport people between different stations.

It's all the work of The Boring Company - another business owned by billionaire Elon Musk.

Known as the Vegas Loop system, its goal is to "provide fast and convenient transportation to the Las Vegas community, its visitors, and beyond", the company says.

A video has gone viral on social media showing a Tesla driving into the tunnel, which is lit up by glowing lights that change color.

In the video, the driver says: "Technically we're just a transportation service for the convention center, but eventually we will be a transportation service for the city to an extent."

At the moment, the Vegas Loop travels between the Harry Reid International Airport, the Allegiant Stadium, downtown Las Vegas and the Las Vegas Convention Center - but according to The Boring Company, the plan is for it to eventually extend all the way down to Los Angeles, and transport more than 90,000 passengers per hour.

The next step for the company will be extending throughout more of Nevada, the company says Clark County and the City of Las Vegas has approved 68 miles of tunnel and 93 stations for the Vegas Loop.

A video of the tunnel has been doing the rounds on TikTok, with some people noting they feel 'claustrophobic' watching it, as the tunnel itself is only just big enough to fit the Tesla car.

Plus, anyone who's seen the buzzy new Netflix film Leave the World Behind all seem to be saying the same thing - particularly thinking about one specific scene where a bunch of Teslas grind to a halt on the road.

"It's all fun and games until Leave the World Behind becomes reality," one person joked, while another said: "Has anyone watched Leave the World Behind lol."

Not everyone is quite so convinced by the idea of traveling via a one-way tunnel, but The Boring Company says there are a whole lot of benefits to its approach - including reducing traffic on the streets and beautifying cities.
