The ever-complicated love life of Elon Musk is back in the news, and while many think of his high-profile relationship with Grimes, it's easy to forget he once dated Amber Heard.
Like people tend to think of her time with Johnny Depp, many forget she had an on-off relationship with the Tesla overlord from 2016 until they split for good in 2018.

As for Heard, she has spoken candidly about their time together, with Musk's biography discussing this time in their lives. The LA Times reminds us of what Walter Isaacson's book says about Musk and Heard, with the Aquaman star giving an eight-word response to their 'heartbreaking' breakup.
Following her divorce from Depp, Heard supposedly "drew [Musk] into a dark vortex" around the time of 2017. Their relationship apparently "lasted more than a year and produced a deep-seated pain that lingers to this day."

Describing this 'hellacious' period in Musk's life, Isaacson writes that "his brother and friends hated her [Heard] with a passion."
Musk reportedly took note of Heard when she appeared in 2013's Machete Kills, with them first meeting when she visited SpaceX a year later. The "Rocky Relationships" chapter explained how Heard took a ride in a Tesla when she visited the facility, then expands on their 'whirlwind' romance. Musk flew to visit her in Australia when filming Aquaman in 2017, while Heard reportedly once roleplayed as the character called Mercy from Blizzard Entertainment's Overwatch.
There's talk of a major argument that occurred when the couple went on a trip with Musk's family to South America in December 2017. Although Heard confirmed to Isaacson that an argument took place, she also shared pictures of them looking loved-up on New Year's Eve.
Kimbal Musk spoke out about Heard, telling Isaacson that it's 'really sad' that his brother "falls in love with these people who are really mean to him." He added: "They’re beautiful, no question, but they have a very dark side and Elon knows that they’re toxic."

As for what she said about their tryst, Heard was reportedly 'fascinated' by Musk's work, with her Musk apparently saying: "I guess I could be called a geek for someone who can also be called a hot chick."
Musk similarly referred to the 'brutal' relationship and accused Heard of still being in love with an ex-boyfriend - Whereas Heard's eight-word response stated: "Elon loves fire, and sometimes it burns him."
Speaking openly about his love life, Musk laughed about why he tends to fall for a certain type of woman and concluded: "Because I’m just a fool for love. I am often a fool, but especially for love."

Alongside opening up about his marriages to Westworld's Talulah Riley, Musk has confessed to the 'emotional pain' he felt after breaking up with Heard.
Although Musk has continued to have children with former Neuralink executive Shivon Zillis, he's currently considered single.
