Sony rolls out compensation to PlayStation Plus users following major 24hr outage

Not everyone is happy with what's being offered

Gamers are finally getting some compensation for the recent PlayStation Network outage.

Nearly a month after they were left without their favorite titles for 24 hours, they’ll be able to get something back for their troubles.

Games ranging from Fortnite to Elden Ring, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 to Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League (if anyone was playing) were inaccessible, with Sony announcing it would make up for the downtime.

As well as complaints that five extra days of PlayStation Plus access wasn't good enough, there was no timeline on when we'd get our 'compensation'.

Although Sony hasn't made an official announcement, users on Reddit have spotted that the five-day extension is being rolled out across PS Plus accounts. They appear to be coming in batches, and unlike your standard update, there's no email notification to let you know about the extension.

This means PlayStation owners have to manually check when their PS Plus subscription will renew.

In terms of claiming your free days, the process should be automatic without having to contact Sony.

It's important to note that you'll only be liable for the extended PS Plus if you were subscribed to the service at the time PSN went down on February 8.

To check your current status, head to your console's Settings menu, navigate to Users and Accounts, Account, Payment and Subscriptions, and then locate Subscriptions to check your renewal date.

You can also check via the PlayStation App by tapping the PlayStation Store icon, the menu button, and then Subscriptions Management.

While not everyone is reporting that they've received their compensation, it seems the rollout is on the way.

With the news spreading on Reddit, it's clear most are still annoyed about what's being offered. More importantly, the extension looks like it'll push many out of their current subscription window, meaning they can't make the most of the Black Friday sale.

One disgruntled gamer wrote: "Sony f**ked up and will be rewarded by millions because of this. They knew exactly what they were doing here."

Another added: "Yea this is what I was concerned about. This can push you out of a sale window and make you pay full price or wait 3+ months."

A third concluded: "I really don't want this, it affected my last sub, not my resubbed one. It'll most likely put me outside the range for the next February sale.

“Why do I run the risk of being penalized when I'm being 'compensated'?"

Back when the PSN went down in 2011, non-PS Plus members were given 30 free days as well as two games, including the likes of LittleBigPlanet and Infamous. PS Plus subscribers got the same deal but 60 days free. It's true that it was a much bigger outage that lasted 23 days, but in 2025, it seems you were expecting something more from the gaming giant.

With your compensation potentially sitting in your account without you knowing, we suggest you check your subscriptions when you get home.
