When you tend to think of the big PlayStation exclusives, the likes of the many God of War games, two stellar The Last of Us titles, and the ongoing story of Insomniac Games' Spider-Man saga. Much like the Horizon games, many sleep on 2020's Ghost of Tsushima.
Despite arriving in the midst of the pandemic when we were all locked up in our homes and gaming 24/7, Ghost of Tsushima is often forgotten in 2025. Even before its Iki Island expansion arrived as part of 2021's Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut, there was already talk of a sequel.
Although we hoped to see more of Jin Sakai, Sucker Punch Productions decided to take us in a new direction with Ghost of Yotei being set some 329 years after the first game.

Picking up with a female warrior called Atsu, adopting 'The Ghost' persona during the Edo period, she takes revenge on the Yotei Six outlaws who killed her family when she was a child.
Given the critical acclaim Ghost of Tsushima earned, PlayStation fans are excited to swing their samurai swords in the sequel.
After Gematsu reported that Ghost of Yotei had been rated in Taiwan and hinted at an imminent release, PlayStation has confirmed when we’ll be returning to this world. An official PlayStation blog locked in an October 2, 2025, release date. The gaming giant explained: "It’s been nearly five years since we shipped Ghost of Tsushima, and in that time we’ve been hard at work making Ghost of Yōtei something special.

"While the stories are unrelated, it’s important to us to make this a worthy follow-up to Jin’s journey, and we can’t wait for you to experience Atsu’s quest for vengeance later this year."
That's all well and good, but what about GTA 6? We previously covered how developers and publishers seem to be holding back on making big announcements for 2026, potentially amid fears that Rockstar Games' juggernaut will eclipse them.
Experts have warned about releasing titles into that "big black hole" left by GTA 6's lack of release date. Of course, releasing anywhere near the automotive adventure will likely see you get sucked into a literal black hole as GTA 6 dominates.

With the long-awaited next entry tipped to make $1 billion in pre-orders alone, it really looks like GTA 6 will top GTA V to become the biggest video game of all time. Over on Reddit, fans are concerned for Ghost of Yotei due to its platform exclusivity and the fact that GTA 6 has been repeatedly confirmed for a similar fall release date.
Although they're very different stories, one worried gamer responded to the Yotei release date and said: "Smack dab in the middle of the GTA VI impact zone. Bold move, Sony."
Another added: "It’s gonna be crushed by GTA 6."
A third concluded: "They can always delay a game, too, in case GTA VI actually releases near their oct 2025 release date."

Others were more optimistic, suggesting that Sony might know when GTA 6 is releasing and specifically picked October 2 for Yotei because it'll avoid getting swallowed by the gaming Goliath.
Still, with no sign of a second GTA 6 trailer, let alone a release date, Ghost of Yotei might be free to slay another day.
