One of PlayStation's hit exclusives set to become unlikely new action series

One of PlayStation's hit exclusives set to become unlikely new action series

It'll be a while before we see a debut though

Get ready because one of PlayStation’s most beloved exclusives is set to become an animated action series.

After the massive success of The Last of Us on HBO - and Season 2 set to hit screens in just a few months - PlayStation is keeping the momentum going.

Sadly, it's not Uncharted - but it is still a banger!

This time it's the epic Ghost of Tsushima.

Sony is teaming up with its platform Crunchyroll - a huge anime streaming platform - which will be the exclusive home of the samurai adaptation. The announcement was made at Sony’s 2025 CES press conference in Las Vegas.

Set in 1274 on Tsushima Island, the game follows the last samurai, Jin Sakai, who must master a new fighting style, the way of the Ghost. On his journey, he must defeat the Mongol forces and fight for the freedom and independence of Japan.

While this story is to be followed by the new series, it will also allegedly blend in elements from that game's Legends expansion, which added co-op modes and added some themes of folklore and myth. So, there's a lot to look forward to!

The base game holds 30-60 hours of content so players can explore the beautiful island, engaging story and deep combat system.

What's more is that the series will be produced in partnership with Aniplex, the studio behind hits like Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Solo Leveling and Sword Art Online.

When the game originally launched on PS4, it was met with overwhelming praise, scoring an impressive 9.2 user rating on Metacritic.

The re-release on PS5 as a Director’s Cut only solidified its reputation, thanks to improved graphics and the excellent Legends mode, earning it an 87 critic score.

With impressively high feedback, it's no wonder Sony wants to adapt the genre into a series.

The adaptation will be directed by Takanobu Mizuno, with story composition by Gen Urobuchi (Nitro Plus) and animation handled by Kamikaze Douga.

The team will bring the traditional samurai aesthetics of Ghost of Tsushima to life 'with cinematic storytelling and striking visuals,' according to Crunchyroll.

Don't get too ready too soon however as the show isn't set to debut until 2027 - and there's no guarantee that it will even happen.

In the meantime, Sucker Punch announced a sequel titled Ghost of Yotei back in Sony's State of Play last year. Following an entirely new protagonist, a Ronin named Atsu, the game is set to release exclusively to PS5 later this year.
