Excitement surrounding the upcoming iPhone 17 release appears to have fragmented following rumors surrounding an updated camera design, as its unveiling has left fans split on what to think.
There's nothing more exciting in the smartphone community than a new iPhone reveal, and with the 17 on the horizon there is plenty for Apple fans to begin getting excited about.
New specs, colors, and an updated design are all on the wishlist of those eyeing an upgrade, but one rumored change to the upcoming 'Pro' lineup has left many conflicted.

As shared by Apple Hub on X, the rumored design of the iPhone 17 Pro looks wildly different to the iPhone 16 equivalent in one key area: the camera.

Instead of the square camera bump that we've come to know and love on the rear of your iPhone, leaks appear to suggest that the iPhone 17 Pro will feature a much wider panel that stretches from one side of the phone to the other.
This is similar to what you might see on the back of Google's Pixel lineup, but would be a dramatic shift in design for the iPhone - and with seemingly no extra or larger lenses at first glance to take advantage of it.
Community opinion is very much split on what to think of this new change, with some happy to see a shift whereas others aren't too keen on the design.
"That back camera looks so bad," writes one user, with another comment adding: "Wow they added more space for nothing, so that they can slowly add more cameras over the next 3-4 versions."

This seems to be the most logical explanation, as there's currently a whole lot of empty space that seems redundant in its current configuration. It could also signal a shift in the positioning of the different lenses, as moving them horizontally instead of in a cluster would bring it in line with what you'll see again on the Pixel.
There are plenty of people that are on board with the new change though, with one user coming to its defense:

"Ok, something like this I could completely get behind," they explain. "I still am not a huge fan of the camera bump change, but it is growing on me. At least there are not visibility split materials."
"iPhone 17 Pro design is more beautiful" adds another reply, so it's clear that not everyone's united against this new change.
If you're looking for more innovative changes within the iPhone lineup though you might still be waiting a while, as insider experts have outlined that it won't be until late 2026 at the earliest that Apple add a foldable device to their lineup.
