Netflix announce official release date for Squid Game season 3

Netflix announce official release date for Squid Game season 3

Good news, there isn't long to wait

There's good news as Netflix is flashing the green light on Squid Game season 3, with the dystopian thriller officially coming back for one more run of episodes. Helping get us through the pandemic, Squid Game season 1 arrived at the perfect time to break records for the streaming service.

More than just being a fluke, Netflix stuck lucky again when Squid Game season 2 went on to top the first and break even more records.

While there were complaints that some burned through season 2 only to be left with a cliffhanger, the good news is that we knew season 3 was coming in 2025.

Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk held back on giving us a proper release date, but now, Netflix has confirmed that Squid Game season 3 will air on June 27, 2025. This is just six months after the second season landed on Boxing Day 2024, so we're not left with one of those achingly long waits between seasons that Game of Thrones or Severance have given us in the past.

Let's not forget that we had to wait over three years between the first and second seasons, so at least Netflix has seemingly learned from the fan outrage.

While it's good news that we'll soon find out how the story of Lee Jung-jae's Seong Gi-hun ends, there's the sad fact that Seong Gi-hun's story is about to end.

Netflix has also released the first batch of images from season 3, showing Hyun-ju (Park Sung-hoon) crouched over a coffin, Lee Byung-hun as the villainous Front man, and one of Gi-hun handcuffed to a bed - presumably after THAT finale confrontation.

There's no escaping the cultural phenomenon that Squid Game has been. Jimmy "MrBeast" Donaldson's most successful YouTube video ever is one based on Squid Game, while he's recently tried to top that with Prime Video's controversial Beast Games.

Hwang Dong-hyuk has admitted he doesn't mind the comparisons between Squid Game and MrBeast's creations, and at the end of the day, Donaldson might've brought even more people to the series.

Squid Game season 2 boasted 265.2 million views during its first 91 days, meaning it trounced Amazon's Red Notice as the most-watched English language movie (230.9 million) and Wednesday as the most-watched English language show (252.1 million).

With season 3 on the way, you can bet that season 2's numbers are going to carry on climbing. Season 2 currently has 173.7 million views and is only halfway through its 91-day qualification period.

Despite complaints that some are going to cancel their Netflix subscription due to the recent price hike, we doubt that's going to stop millions from tuning in to Netflix season 3.
