As everyone's favorite bingeworthy obsession, Hwang Dong-hyuk's Squid Game is once again back in the news. After an unprecedented climb to the top of the Netflix charts when season 1 was released in 2021, most assumed the story would end there.
Still, with Hwang Dong-hyuk writing the original story back in 2009 and struggling to find a home until Netflix took an interest in 2019, the temptation to do more was too much.
Following season 1's cliffhanger ending, we were left dangling for three full years until Squid Game season 2 returned for a shorter run of seven episodes.

Leaving us on another frustrating cliffhanger, there's also the confirmation that season 3 is the third and final run of episodes.
Thankfully, we know the dystopian survival thriller will be back sooner rather than later, with Variety getting the scoop on Squid Game season 3's release date.
Speaking to the outlet, Hwang Dong-hyuk narrowed down that loose '2025' window and said "At this point, anything I might say is going to be a spoiler, so I want to be cautious.

“But what I can say is, after Season 2 launches, I believe we will be announcing the launch date for Season 3 soon."
As well as an imminent answer, he continued to speculate: "I probably expect that to launch around summer or fall next year."
Summer 2025 would be six months and late fall would be 11 months, but it apparently won't be long until we know the exact date.
He revealed some potential plot points and asked whether Gi-hun will continue his mission having seemingly lost everything: "Is he going to give up or persist? And so you’re going to meet our character Gi-hun at a very critical crossroads as we begin the third season."

Hwang Dong-hyuk concluded with a cryptic warning: "Gi-hun will not be the man he was in Season 2.”
After the achingly long wait for season 2, it's good news that season 3 is much closer. It might've been annoying to leave things on another cliffhanger, with many arguing it feels like seasons 2 and 3 were originally part of a final season but were split in two to garner interest.
This becomes more obvious by the fact that season 1 gave us all six games in nine episodes while season 2 had two different storylines running and only gave three games in seven episodes.

Split seasons have become more common in shows like The Walking Dead and Invincible, whereas Squid Game has rather sneakily marketed it as two separate seasons. Either way, at least the show is coming back for more.
Given that season 2 has continued to smash records for the streaming giant, Netflix will likely be sitting pretty with the final season.
