We've only just entered the second quarter of 2025 and already, the 'worst movie' of the year has been declared.
Turning popular games into movies can really go either way.
Shows like HBO's The Last of Us nailed it, bringing Joel and Ellie's journey to TV with great success and renewing it for a second season.

Whilst The Super Mario Bros. Movie and tight-budgeted Five Nights at Freddy’s also proved that game-to-screen adaptations can win big.
But movie critics have been quick on the trigger to class A Minecraft Movie as a big miss this year.

Starring Jack Black, Jason Momoa and Jennifer Coolidge, the live-action adaptation of the beloved video game follows four misfits who find themselves in the game’s Overworld through a mysterious portal.
Some comments agreed with the post, reading: "Everyone saw this coming" and "I knew it would tank when I watched the trailer."
Someone else joked that Snow White still holds the top, writing: "'A MINECRAFT MOVIE' is NOT the worst movie of the year. Please, let’s respect 'Snow White' position as the worst movie of the year. 'A MINECRAFT MOVIE' can claim the 2nd spot."
A more sceptic viewer added: "I’ll believe it when I see it. I can’t judge this movie until I watch the movie."

On its opening weekend (4 April), A Minecraft Movie was a hit at the box office and pulled in an estimated $300 million (£233 million) globally.
A similar thing happened with The Super Mario Bros. Movie which scored a nearly identical 59% from critics but an impressive 95% audience rating. The Nintendo game adaptation went on to earn $1.3 billion globally.

Undoubtedly, the movie has a lot of weight to bear, being that Minecraft is one of the best-selling games ever, selling over 300 million units since 2011. Not to mention that it's a childhood staple of millions of kids across the world as they've grown up.
So it's likely fans will be less bothered by technical flaws when they see their favourite world brought to life with humour and characters.
