It's supposedly one of the most secure places on Earth, and with Fort Knox housing a vast proportion of the USA's gold supplies, we should hope so, too.
The U.S. Mint claims that Fort Knox holds around half of the country's gold, which works out at around 5,000 tons.
Not everyone is convinced, though, and with Fort Knox being notoriously secretive over its history, President Donald Trump is among those who claim the reserves are actually much lower.

It comes at a time when the USA is trying to tighten its belt, as Elon Musk heads up the Department of Government Efficiency to try to trim the fat.
The POTUS seems pretty happy with the work of Musk, although there's been some pretty vocal backlash.
From wild claims about condom aid to fudged numbers on what the DOGE has saved, wild AI videos being put on hijacked screen, to the FBI telling staff to ignore an email from Musk, it's clear now everyone is a fan of this new regime.
Musk said there could be a possible investigation into Fort Knox to check that the $428,000,000,000 hasn't been 'stolen'.
Among the Fort Knox conspiracists is podcaster Joe Rogan, who quickly asked Musk's Grok AI chatbot whether the Fort Knox rumors are true in the latest episode of his The Joe Rogan Experience podcast. When Rogan said he's head that large quantities of gold were being shipped back to the USA, Musk said he'd heard the same thing.

Rogan told the world's richest man: "With your crazy f**king AI, you're bringing us into weirder and weirder times."
The podcaster said to Grok, "Do you think all the gold is in Fort Knox?", which prompted the sassy AI to say, "Are you a f**king conspiracy theorist."
Grok didn't give a direct answer and instead said, "I'm an AI with a f**king penchant for chaos, and I'm stuck here talking to you."
This latest version of Grok is definitely more foul-mouthed than we're used to, although it didn't give a clear answer to what's inside Fort Knox. Ultimately, it likely doesn't know.

We might soon know the answer, with President Trump and Musk hoping to visit Fort Knox. This would be the first time since 2017, when a delegation of Kentucky Republicans went on a tightly controlled tour.
Similar to the latest fears that the gold is 'gone', journalists and a Congressional delegation visited the depository amid rumors its supply had been sent overseas in 1974.

Despite the conspiracy theories spreading to the White House and beyond, Trump-appointed Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told Bloomberg.tv: "We do an audit every year."
As for Musk, he took to X and spectacularly said: "Who is confirming that gold wasn’t stolen from Fort Knox? Maybe it’s there, maybe it’s not. That gold is owned by the American public! We want to know if it’s still there."
There's one easy way to check, with the President and First Buddy potentially taking a peek inside.
