SNL issue rare apology following ‘mean’ sketch mocking Donald Trump's eye-watering tariffs

Most people think the comedy show crossed a line

SNL has issued a rare apology to an actress following a ‘mean’ sketch that mocked President Donald Trump’s eye-watering tariffs.

Over the weekend, the popular comedy show Saturday Night Live debuted a sketch poking fun at Trump’s shocking tariff announcements.

The president has been embroiled in a trade war against China after he introduced import tariffs on the country, which retaliated with fees of their own on imported American products.

SNL touched on this subject on Saturday (April 12) with a skit based on the TV series White Lotus, which they parodied as ‘White POTUS’.

In the sketch, various members of the cast played Trump, his wife Melania, and his children, Donald Jr, Eric and Ivanka.

Melania, who was played by Chloe Fineman, said: “Can you imagine if America lost all its money and no-one in the world respected us anymore?”

Trump looks at his phone to see a news bulletin that reads, ‘Trump triggers worldwide recession’.

Later on in the clip, a scene plays out where RFK Jr suggests taking all of the fluoride out of the drinking water.

This is when a new character appears parodying the character played by Aimee Lou Wood in White Lotus.

Wood has since taken to social media to speak out against the joke aimed at her teeth, saying that she found the jab to be ‘mean and unfunny’.

On Instagram, she wrote: “I am not thin skinned. I actually love being taken the piss out of when it’s clever and in good spirits. But the joke was about fluoride. I have big gap teeth, not bad teeth.

“I don’t mind caricature - I understand that’s what SNL is. But the rest of the skit was punching up and I/Chelsea was the only one punched down.”

The actress later went on to share that she has since received apologies from SNL.

Fans have taken to social media to defend the actress, with one user commenting that her teeth are ‘beautiful’.

Others have praised Wood for not opting for veneers to get the ‘perfect’ Hollywood smile.

Wood previously talked about her teeth while appearing on The Jonathan Ross Show where Stephen Fry said to her: “You’ve obviously made an enormous number of people happy by not changing your teeth.

Wood jokingly replied: “I can’t believe the impact my teeth are having. The Americans can’t believe it”.
