People have been speculating about why ChatGPT CEO Sam Altman really carries around that blue backpack everywhere he goes.
It seems that artificial intelligence is growing every day, and as our iPhones are infected with the new Apple Intelligence, we're even taking it on the move with us. There are obvious naysayers when it comes to AI's advantages, and with legitimate concerns for everyone from artists to journalists, there need to be some clear boundaries. Well, unless Donald Trump gets his own way.
The wildest theories think that AI could gain sentience and eradicate the human race in its own quest for power, while even those behind the current boom in AI seem aware of its dangers.

If you've noticed that ChatGPT CEO Sam Altman always carries a blue backpack, there are claims that it’s always with him for a very good reason - and it's one that could save us all.
Altman has become synonymous with his blue backpack, which has now been referred to as the 'Nuclear Backpack.' A rumor surfaced on X that Altman's laptop is inside, holding the codes to stop ChatGPT in its tracks if it goes rogue and threatens us with some Terminator-inspired future.
Altman is something of a doomsday prepper, telling The New Yorker in 2016: "I try not to think about it too much. But I have guns, gold, potassium iodide, antibiotics, batteries, water, gas masks from the Israeli Defense Force, and a big patch of land in Big Sur I can fly to." He later walked back some of these comments and said that it's just a 'hobby', with none of the above actually coming in handy if AI goes wrong.

The idea that Altman has the all-important codes to stop AI is one that makes sense, but others have called it into question. Altman has never directly confirmed what's in his backpack, and in a January 2024 interview with The Economist, he suggested there's no switch that can pull the plug on AI: "There’s no one big magic red button we have that blows up the data centre, which I think some people sort of assume exists."
He continued: "It’s not this binary go/stop decision, it is the many little decisions along the way. Allow this, don’t allow this, how to predict what the risks of the future are going to be, how to mitigate those."
One skeptic of the blue backpack theory is ChatGPT itself. When asked if Altman's blue backpack can destroy AI, ChatGPT writes: "No, Sam Altman’s backpack does not contain any 'codes to destroy AI.' This idea is purely fictional or speculative. In reality, the concept of 'codes to destroy AI' is not something that could be carried in a backpack."

ChatGPT reiterates that there are 'mechanisms' in place to shut down or deactivate AI systems, although it seems unlikely that Altman's backpack contains some magical failsafe. As for what’s really in Altman’s backpack, who knows?
