ChatGPT CEO jokes about his blue backpack that could 'destroy' AI

The AI boss says he's in favor of a big red button

ChatGPT’s Sam Altman has joked that his blue backpack could ‘destroy’ AI.

Last year, the CEO sat down with Lex Fridman for an episode of his podcast where he talked about the famous bag.

Not much is known about the contents of the mysterious blue backpack, which Altman seems to carry around with him everywhere he goes.

Talking about the future of AI, the tech mogul discussed the possibility of a super intelligent AGI.

When Fridman asked about the idea of having an ‘off switch’ in case things go wrong, Altman replied: “Like a big red button in the data center we don’t tell anyone about? Yeah I’m a fan.”

The AI boss went on to joke that it’s in ‘my backpack’.

People have speculated as to what’s inside Altman’s secretive bag that he takes with him every day.

It has even been nicknamed as the ‘Nuclear Backpack’ after a rumor was sparked on X, formerly Twitter, that the CEO’s laptop is inside which holds the codes to stop ChatGPT in its tracks.

It is thought that this would be implemented if the AI went rogue and started threatening humankind.

Many skeptics of artificial intelligence fear that the technology could become sentient and eradicate the human race.

Still, advancements in AI tech continue to plow on, with the introduction of the likes of Apple Intelligence to iPhones and Gemini on Google phones.

Many viewers were intrigued by Altman’s insight into the AI world, with some taking to the YouTube comment section of the podcast clip to share their own thoughts.

One user wrote: “I didn't think we'd get close to AGI in my lifetime (I'm 56), but having used GPT-4, in both work (as a software engineer) and personally, I feel I might actually live to see it. We live in very exciting and discombobulating times.”

Another said: “Wow. I'm even more excited and even more terrified for the future. This is going to morph very fast, much faster than most people will expect.”

And a third person commented: “I am glad Mr Altman is trying to find the best and safest way to achieve AGI. Skipping steps by finding the perfect code and rushing forward to be first will bring us something uncontrollable.”

Time will tell as to how long it’ll be before artificial intelligence becomes super intelligent.

Let’s hope Altman has a backup plan secured in his bag!
