Elon Musk's car collection is 'out of this world'

Elon Musk's car collection is 'out of this world'

Musk even sent one of his cars to space.

Elon Musk was the richest man to come out of 2023, valued at $257.6 billion.

However, his fortune took a hit earlier this month when he was dethroned by Bernard Arnault, the CEO of French luxury goods group LVMH, whose net worth reached nearly $230 billion.

Still in the top three wealthiest people in the world, what can you expect to find behind the tech entrepreneur's garage doors? Hint, it's not just electric cars.

Musk has previously confessed to driving around in a Porsche 911 997 back in the mid-2000s, just before he launched Tesla.

But, the story doesn't start here.

The tech billionaire respects automotive history as he admitted to owning a Ford Model T from 1920, which is considered the most influential car of the 20th century. I mean, if you can't respect the past, how can you hope to change the future?

The Model T was gifted by Musk's friend as something to compare his Tesla creations to. Although, the $850 price tag of the Model T is not even a fraction of Tesla prices today.

In 1999, Musk acquired one of the rarest supercars ever made, the McLaren F1. Despite claiming that it was uninsured, Musk has been reported to once hit 215mph on a private runway as well as crashing the vehicle on his way to an investment meeting.

The popular X tweeter, who previously claimed to not care what people think about him, said that he later got rid of the car because he 'didn't want people always writing that I have a high-performance gasoline sports car.'

Tesla unveiled its first electric car in 2008, the Roadster (project Dark Star), of which Elon Musk became the first owner. Naturally, Musk used the Roadster as his daily drive for years before parting ways with it.

However, rather than post it up for sale or auction, Musk did a very Musk-like thing and donated it to space. That's right!

Attaching it to his SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket, Musk stuck a dummy named 'Starman' in the passenger seat, played 'Space Oddity' on the stereo, and launched it into space in February 2018.

'It’s just going to be out there in deep space for millions, maybe billions of years. Who knows?' Musk said.

Oh, and if you're interested, there's literally a website called whereisroadster.com where you can follow its journey through space.

Most interestingly, Musk once purchased the Lotus Esprit, dubbed 'Wet Nellie', at an auction. You might recognise this one if you're a James Bond fan, as it featured in 007's The Spy Who Loved Me.

He kept his ownership of the underwater prop a secret for years with no one knowing her was the buyer.

And the inspiration doesn't stop there as, in 2019, Musk tweeted that the Cybertruck's design was partly influenced by none other than Wet Nellie.

Over the years, the billionaire has also owned the E-Type Jaguar Roadster, Hamman BMW M5, BMW 320i, Audi Q7, Tesla Model S Performance and Russian fighter jet Aero L-39 Albatros.
