If you neglect basic car maintenance like checking your oil or tyres, you’re setting yourself up for trouble.
One woman shared the effects of not changing your car oil and it's not pretty.
'I think I broke my car by not getting enough oil changes,' emsinggg0, or Emily, captioned in her TikTok.
'What is the longest you have gone without getting your oil changed?' she asked her viewers. 'Me personally, I think it's been about two years.'

She mentioned that her car was 'busted' and after talking to her husband, father-in-law and other men she knows, she realised she should've paid more attention.
Despite a dashboard light warning her that the car needed service, she chose to ignore it.
'Yes, there was a light on. But I always take that as a suggestion,' she admitted.

'I know this is my fault and I am very disappointed in myself.'
Two days ago, she went on a school run and was advised to change it, which she did. But after pulling out of the garage after the change, she noticed smoke coming out of her car.
Emily reported the car 'driving funny' and said it 'felt heavy and was making a rattling noise,' making her think it was something more
She continued: 'It's smoking so bad, I can't even drive it. I don't feel safe driving it.

'I'm pretty sure I've ruined my car by being an irresponsible idiot.'
Emily also confessed that she tends to 'blame other people' for her problems and wondered why her husband didn’t remind her to change the oil.
After having the car for three years and getting two free oil changes with it, she recalls but only claimed one.

Some viewers have commented that their other half helps them with car changes so they needn't worry.
'I used to do the same thing tell I got with my bf. He was a mechanic thankfully he lets me know when I need a oil change and I just drop it off with him. I went ab a year and half before I got wit hi,' the first viewer wrote.
