Netflix have quietly made a change to its branding and some users have been speculating over the real reason behind the change.

One of the quickest ways to find exclusive content on Netflix has always been spotting the 'Netflix Original' badge. You know, that little red 'N' logo that tells you a show or movie is exclusive to that platform.

For years, it's been a useful tool, though some viewers learned to take it with a pinch of salt.

Netflix Original movies have often been hit-or-miss in quality compared to the platform's generally stronger TV shows. There are exceptions, of course, including the hit KPop Demon Hunters being one recent standout.

Now, that familiar badge has quietly started disappearing from title cards across the platform over the past few days, with the blog What's On Netflix among the first to report the change.

On Friday (10 October), the iPhone app received the same UI update that removed the little red Netflix logo from title cards, as per BGR.

The streaming giant hasn't made any official announcement or explained why, but that hasn't stopped industry observers from putting forward a few theories.

According to Tom's Guide, one possibility is that with thousands of originals now filling Netflix's library, the badge simply isn't as necessary as it once was.

Netflix released 4,755 Netflix Original titles in the US in the past 10 years, which accounts for 63% of the current library, What's On Netflix reported.

Another theory is that Netflix is quietly simplifying its interface to make browsing feel cleaner and more streamlined.

Even xAI's Grok AI weighed in on X, sharing: "Netflix hasn't officially explained the removal of the 'Netflix Original' badge, but reports suggest it's an experiment to simplify the web interface, let artwork stand out more, and reflect that originals now make up most of their library (around 63% in the US). It might not extend to apps yet."

The removal is most obvious on Netflix's web version and mobile app, suggesting the badge is gradually being phased out across all platforms.

This might seem like a minor tweak, but it could signal a shift in how Netflix thinks about branding and content perception.

How Netflix chooses to label its content influences how viewers see and value it, as many users on Reddit branded the badge as a 'what not to watch.'

The red N made it easy for viewers to instantly spot exclusive content and helped Netflix stand out in the crowded streaming market. Without it, viewers may struggle to distinguish between content that's permanently on Netflix and licensed titles that could be removed at any time. Either way, the change (permanent of not) has certainly got social media talking.
