Loud noise in Leave the World Behind has been explained by film's director

Loud noise in Leave the World Behind has been explained by film's director

The director of Netflix's Leave the World Behind explains the decision behind the eery screeching noise that can be heard in some scenes.

Since Leave the World Behind has hit out Netflix screens, viewers have been deeply analysing the movie, trying to uncover hidden messages and subtle details throughout the sinister thriller.

Adapted from Rumaan Alam's novel, the film revolves around a family renting a home outside New York City that quickly takes a dark and eerie turn.

Amongst the ongoing - and unanswered - themes in the Netflix hit, viewers have taken note of the screeching 'noise' that occurs.

While not directly addressed in the movie, a few hints suggest potential answers to the mysterious noise.

In one scene, protagonist Amanda experiences a deafening screeching noise while in the woods.

Director Sam Esmail revealed this was a 'raw scene' as the character (Julia Roberts) hadn't heard the noise before and was unaware it was part of the film.

The following day, Amanda's son Archie starts to fall ill, and soon after horrifyingly loses his teeth.

Though the two events seem unconnected, the film director speaks out about the noise's meaning and his inspiration behind it.

He said: 'When I read that in the book, I immediately got excited and spoke to my sound designer who I’ve worked with since the first season of Mr. Robot, Kevin Buchholz.

'Before we shot a frame of the film, we were trying to dial in this sound. We took elements of Havana Syndrome, which is a mysterious sound that they still have not gotten to the bottom of that has been causing people to have ailments.'

Havana Syndrome was experienced in Cuba in 2016, and although the noise is not directly addressed in the movie, Archie speculates whether it came from a 'sonic boom' or a plane 'breaking the sound barrier.' However, these theories are never further proven.

Later on in the movie, G.H. Scott points out that planes aren't typically intended to 'break' sound barriers. Onwards to an intense conversation that has G.H. Scott and Clay held at gunpoint, Danny

suggests that the noise could be the result of Havana Syndrome, whereby microwave radiation gets emitted through sound, resulting in an unsettling screeching noise.

Fans are still trying to dissect the exact cause of the noise in the movie. In the original novel, the noise was described to have come from 'Government-owned planes' unknown to civilians.

Whereas, other fans believe the noise was 'intentionally' making people sick that may have had something to do with the 'shattering noises' of planes flying overhead.
