Katy Perry might have nine number one songs on the charts, but her most recent record-breaking move has happened outside of the music industry after she snatched an infamous and unwanted record away from fellow pop star Taylor Swift.
While Katy Perry's music career isn't experiencing the greatest of success right now, she's still managed to take new steps that almost every other celebrity - let alone pop star - can't say they've achieved.
The 'Firework' singer was one of six women to take a flight into space with Blue Origin - Jeff Bezos' space agency - and the 11-minute trip beyond the Earth's atmosphere has both shocked and disappointed many.

People were quick to call out Perry before she even stepped foot in the spacecraft, and major brands have hilariously hit back against her decision to journey into space with Blue Origin on social media.
Some have even bizarrely accused the pop star of 'faking' the trip, although that might be the more favorable outcome when you begin to consider the records that Perry and the other passengers have now likely broken.

Not only did the flight itself cost a shocking amount of money for both Blue Origin and those who decided to jump on board, but it's also likely to have had a significantly negative effect on the environment to a point that eclipses fellow musician Taylor's Swift's infamous record, as reported by TheGamer.

While it's hard to properly quantify the exact amount of carbon emissions generated by both Swift's private jet usage/lengthy tour and Blue Origin's space launch, it has been indicated that the 11 minute trip that Perry took part in likely had a larger impact overall.
Experts have estimated that a single Blue Origin launch produces around 50 tonnes of carbon emissions, which is staggering for a flight that is 'supposedly' emission-free due to the use of water vapor-powered rockets - although it's speculated that this could also produce greenhouse gases when mixed with existing clouds in the air.
Comparatively, the launch that Katy Perry took part in produced roughly the same carbon emissions that one individual from the bottom billion people across Earth would produce in their entire life, leading many to question whether it was really worth it.
Many celebrities have called out the 'wasteful' nature of this Blue Origin mission with Olivia Munn branding the trip 'gluttunous', as per the Metro. Emily Ratajkowski added that the situation was 'beyond parody' and 'end of time s***', whereas Olivia Wilde sarcastically wrote: "Billion dollars bought some good memes I guess."

What has only continues to fuel the flames behind Perry's controversial trip however is the resurfacing of a video that shows the pop star advocating against climate change and for global warming awareness, as shared by the Daily Mail.

Filmed for UNICEF, Perry begins the blip by stating: "Let's take a journey to see how man-made climate change is hurting children around the world.
"The worst part about this is that some of the youngest and most vulnerable citizens of our world are bearing the most unfair burden of climate change," Perry continued in the weather report-like clip from 2015, adding: "Let's encourage our world leaders to take this issue seriously [...] together we can help change the forecast for millions of children."

Jeff Bezos has been at the heart of many climate change related criticisms in recent years, as it was revealed that his private jet pumps out around 207 years worth of pollution in just 12 months, so many have branded Katy Perry a hypocrite for pairing with the Amazon founder on another climate-harming project despite previously speaking out against similar actions.
