Explorers drop GoPro down 'deepest pit in America' and people are convinced they can see someone lurking

“This is the stuff in my nightmares.”

There are many caves in America that are too deep and dangerous to explore.

A lot of explorers who take them on can sometimes end up at risk or even worse, trapped when taking a wrong turn through the labyrinth.

So what does it look like at the bottom of the deepest pit in America?

It’s a place that few have ever braved to travel to so one YouTube duo took matters into their own hands to provide a glimpse of what is really going on down there.

Identical twins James and Edward, who go by ActionAdventureTwins on their platform, dropped a GoPro into the Fantastic Pit in Ellison’s Cave, Georgia.

The pit is 586 ft - the deepest in the US - and is not for the inexperienced to explore.

There have been a number of accidents at Ellison’s Cave over the years, including the tragic death of a caver in 1999 when they became tangled up in multiple ropes.

A similar incident happened in 2011 when two university students died of hypothermia after becoming stuck on rope close to the bottom of the cave’s 125 ft Warm-Up pit.

James and Edward documented their journey through the cave before reaching the Fantastic Pit where they can be seen on camera lowering the GoPro into the ground.

However, the footage of the descent has some people terrified as there appears to be something visible in the darkness.

In the comments below the footage people said they could see ‘a shadow of a man standing in the back’ and were convinced that he was ‘standing right there’.

“There is a dark shaped figure lurking like a beast,” someone else observed.

While the ‘outline of a person on the way down’ was exceedingly ‘creepy’, it also seems quite improbable that someone would be down there at all.

It’s more likely the case that the human mind will conjure up scary ghouls from the depths of the shadows.

There's something primal about a fear of the dark, but it is usually our minds playing tricks on us when confronted with something eerie and creepy like a dark cave.

One commenter wrote: “This is the stuff in my nightmares but for some reason I'm addicted to watching it.”

Another theorized about why the cave looked how it did: “Honestly surprised the bottom wasn't full of water. It must drain out somewhere even deeper. It would be fun to explore it with a drone if you could.”

You can learn a lot from dropping GoPros into places, provided you attach it to a line and remember to reel it back in.

One person shocked viewers by uploading a YouTube video where they dropped a GoPro off the side of a cruise ship to see what was swimming in the wake.

The camera - which was presumably on a string or something similar - drifts to the bottom of the ocean floor, showing what's going on down there.

Schools of fish swarm the camera and different marine life is visible as it descends to the bottom - even a shark appearing out of the darkness.

That's the beauty of YouTube - letting us see stuff like this, without having to go anywhere near a shark or into the depths of a deadly pit.
