Flying cars might be the stereotype you think of when you think about the future, but it looks vehicles might be conquering the seas before the skies thanks to one tech billionaire’s famous electric truck range.
The first deliveries of the Tesla Cybertruck in November this year have drawn excitement from across the globe, but billionaire owner Elon Musk will have just sent fans into a frenzy with his announcement they may soon be able to double up as a boat.

Posting to his platform X, which he renamed from Twitter earlier this year, Musk said Tesla will offer a mod package to the Cybertruck which will allow it to “traverse at least 100m of water as a boat”.
Musk was responding to a clip posted of an interview with Lars Moravy, Tesla’s vice president of vehicle engineering, in which he explained the billionaire had always wanted Cybertruck to be aquatic.
“Elon did want to make it a boat, so the vehicle almost floats,” Moravy says in the clip shared to X.
“Maybe you’d have to add a little bit of extra buoyancy just to keep it up.

“And you know if you’re creative and you want you could figure out how to put an outboard motor plugged into your outlet there, turn it on from your screen and go boating.”
Stood alongside car enthusiast and former chat show host Jay Leno in the interview, Moravy jokingly added: “I haven’t engineered that one yet but I’m sure you could do it Jay.”
Although Moravy was cracking wise about the Tesla boat concept, none other than the owner of the electric car company himself has now responded to the video to confirm a mod to “go boating” will indeed be offered for the Cybertruck.
“We are going to offer a mod package that enables Cybertruck to traverse at least 100m of water as a boat,” Musk posted on X.

“Mostly just need to upgrade cabin door seals.”
Videos of the near-indestructible Cybertruck being kicked and hammered without suffering a scratch have been viewed millions of times since it was first released in November, and a promotional video by Tesla showed it beating a Porsche 911 in a drag race while towing a Porsche 911.
Musk, whose net worth is thought to be over 250 billion dollars, has made some big promises about his Tesla truck before of course - but it might not be a surprise for the next viral video of his trademark silver truck to show it cruising on the water.
