The Summer 2024 Olympics were a huge hit with millions of people worldwide tuning in to catch the action from Paris.
But one Canadian broadcast engineer tuned into a completely different channel which he didn't expect.
Peter Fairlie from Ontario used his backyard satellite dish to search for sports channels in the hope of catching the Olympic Games when he came across a 'peculiar signal.'

In an interview with Global News, Peter shared his surprise: "I saw Pyongyang on it and that piqued my curiosity. It was like: is this really coming out of North Korea?"
And in fact, it was.
Entirely by accident, Peter managed to pick up North Korean State TV and 'couldn't stop watching' once he found it.

'It's really mind-boggling stuff when you start watching their propaganda,' he continued.
The broadcast began with North Korea's national anthem and tributes to the country's former rulers.
The patriotic propaganda showed footage of mass sports events, military parades, and even missile launches.
President Kim Jong Un made several appearances throughout. According to Global News, he was 'portrayed as a God' triggering 'fan frenzies' and praised by the public.

North Korea ranks among some of the most extreme censorship in the world in that the government has strict control over communications including broadcasts and social media.
Their TV is very difficult to access from outside the country so Peter stumbling across this was a major surprise.
'It's very 1980s too, it's very MTV,' Peter remarked in an interview with CNN.

Peter shared the footage on YouTube which quickly amassed millions of views, showing a rare glimpse into the world of North Korea.
He even recalled having strange dreams after watching a full day of the channel: 'For two nights in a row I just had a lot of very bizarre dreams as if I were there.'
People have commented on the engineer's extraordinary finding.
'"Yeah, so I was trying to steal the Olympics, and I accidentally picked up North Korea." Wild,' a surprised user replied.

'Guy was trying to get free cable and found North Korea,' the second user on the YouTube thread wrote.
'it’s crazy how everything looks like 1955, 1985, and 2005 at the same time,' another user said in response to Peter's original video.
'I feel like I am watching inter dimensional cable tv,' another commented.
