Disturbing request Palisades fire suspect asked ChatGPT before he allegedly set city on fire

12 people lost their lives and over 6,000 homes were destroyed

The January 2025 Palisades fires rocked the state of California, and alongside damage thought to be in excess of $25 million, with over 6,000 homes being destroyed, the devastating blaze claimed the lives of 12 people.

California had issued a red flag weather warning near the start of the month, and with the area having faced nearly eight months without any measurable rainfall, a battalion chief for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said it was the perfect recipe for a wildfire.

A fire was first reported on January 7, covering 10 acres in the mountains near Pacific Palisades. As crews battled to extinguish the flames, the fire grew and raged for 31 days.

Although one meteorologist 'predicted' the wildfires and saved countless lives (as well as Joe Rogan saying he foreshadowed them), no one could've predicted the full effects of the Palisades fires. Homes belonging to celebrities, including Paris Hilton, Billy Crystal, Anthony Hopkins, and Reese Witherspoon, were all lost, but this was just a small part of the devastation

The eyes of the world were on California, with wild conspiracy theories about a directed-energy weapon, President Trump laying the blame at the feet of California's Governor Gavin Newsom, and a major energy company was investigated as a potential catalyst.

After investigators scrambled to find out the real trigger of the blaze, a 29-year-old man was arrested under suspicion of arson. The BBC reports how Jonathan Rinderknecht has been arrested in connection with the fire, with information on his digital devices linking him to the incident. Justice Department officials have stated that this includes a ChatGPT-generated image of a burning city.

Rinderknecht was arrested in Florida on October 7 and has been charged with destruction of property by means of fire.

Speaking at a news conference, acting US Attorney Bill Essayli confirmed: "The arrest, we hope, will offer a measure of justice to all those impacted."

Essayli explained how further charges could follow, including murder for the 12 deaths caused by the fire.

The initial blaze was known as the Lachman fire and was allegedly started by Rinderknecht on New Year's Day.

As well as an Uber passenger recalling how they rode with an 'agitated and angry' Rinderknecht as their driver on New Year's Eve, phone data was used to pinpoint his location to the start of the fire.

The biggest link comes from a number of concerning ChatGPT queries. A search of his history supposedly includes Rinderknecht asking the AI chatbot: "Are you at fault if a fire is lift [sic] because of your cigarettes?"

The indictment alleges that he wanted to "preserve evidence of himself trying to assist in the suppression of the fire." However, searches from July 2024 include him asking ChatGPT to create a 'dystopian painting' that featured a burning forest and people running away from the scene.

The prompt apparently included text that read: "In the middle [of the painting], hundreds of thousands of people in poverty are trying to get past a gigantic gate with a big dollar sign on it.

"On the other side of the gate and the entire wall is a conglomerate of the richest people.

"They are chilling, watching the world burn down, and watching the people struggle. They are laughing, enjoying themselves, and dancing."

Just one month before the fire, investigators claim that Rinderknecht used the following prompt: "I literally burnt the Bible that I had. It felt amazing. I felt so liberated."

After appearing in court on October 9, Jonathan Rinderknecht was denied bond by United States Magistrate Judge Nathan W. Hill, with him ordered to remain custody of the U.S. Marshals until his trial.
