A horrifying video of a phone under a microscope shows just how disgusting your smartphone really is.

We take our smartphones everywhere with us, whether it's on the public transport, placed down at a restaurant table or even by our pillows at night - the device is never far from our hands.

But how often do you wash your phone? No, that isn’t a trick question because it turns out they actually get a lot dirtier than we might have realized.

One clip has gone viral after it shows just what is lurking on our smartphones from under a microscope.

The video shows someone performing an experiment where they play a phone under the microscope to get a closer look.

Zooming on the screen and the speaker at the top of the gadget, tiny bugs can be seen crawling around.

They also show how bacteria gets transferred from the phone to our hands.

Not to mention, it probably ends up on our ears when we make a call!

The footage caused quite a stir online after going viral, with viewers understandably horrified and what they had seen.

With the clip being posted to Reddit, the user captioned it with, ‘a dirty smartphone under a microscope’.

Many people took to the comment section to share their reactions, with one user writing: “I’m never putting the phone to my ear again thanks.”

Another said: “Now I am sorry I watched this.”

A third person shared a rather queasy and not-so-fun fact by adding: “Fun fact: your smartphone screen has 10 times more bacteria than an average toilet seat. You're welcome.”

A fourth user joked: “This is why I throw mine in the dishwasher at least twice a week, hot cycle works best.”

Another said: “I’m fine with my unseen microbes and intend to keep them unseen.”

This prompted a reply from someone who wrote: “Think of them as pets. Get them some treats and toys for Christmas!”

How do you clean your smartphone?

According to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), this is the proper way to clean your device.

First, it’s important to unplug the device before you start cleaning and then use a lint-free cloth which has been slightly dampened with soap and water.

They advise against using spray cleaners directly onto the device and it’s best to avoid aerosol sprays and cleaning solutions that contain bleach or abrasives.

Make sure to keep liquids and moisture away from any openings on the device.
