Sometimes smartphones are too 'smart' for their own good.
When you think alarms, you may think the main problem is hitting the 'Snooze' button to get a few extra z's.
But some iPhone users have reported that their device's alarm is failing to go off altogether.

One Redditor opened up a discussion in the online community by questioning: 'Has anyone else had issues with their alarms failing to go off in the morning like this?'.
Typically, on iPhones, there is a set list for alarm times which you can customise to one that fits you.
They had set their sequential morning alarms for 6.38am, 6.40am, 6.43am, and 6.48am, but reported that 'incredibly inconveniently' only their alarm for 6.45am 'actually sounded.'

They found that the other alarms 'remained set but failed to sound' and it wasn't a case of them hitting the snooze button on them either.
Other users have replied reporting the same issue.
One wrote: 'Yea I’ve had the same thing happen to me, set the alarm and then nothing happened at the time it should have gone off but it showed that it was still active. Puzzling.'
Another noted: 'Yep I’ve overslept twice the past weeks since the new update dropped. Not sure if I cancelled the alarms half asleep or if they didn’t go off though.'

Others have assumed the failed alarms are related to the new iOS update.
However, one user may have identified the unknown iPhone setting that's causing the issue.
The Reddit user reported that there's a hidden feature on Apple smartphones called 'Attention Aware' and it means that it 'thinks' you're looking at the phone when the alarm goes off.

This feature determines whether the user is looking at the device and automatically adjusting volume and screen brightness.
Therefore, the alarm display still shows but without playing any sound. Quite an oxymoronic way to wake someone up, if you ask me!
The Redditor explained his frustration towards the Apple device and has resorted to buying a physical alarm instead.
And they're not alone. Apple users certainly aren't happy with the setting - and the fact it's turned on by default - and have since turned it off to avoid any future sleep-ins.

To turn off Attention Aware on your iPhone, you can go into Settings > Accessibility > Face ID and Passcodes > Turn off Attention Aware Features. You'll need to type in your passcode to authorise the change.
Alternatively, you can type in 'Attention Aware' in your Apple device and it will come up.
