Not everyone can afford to buy a new iPhone every year. For those on limited budgets, it is important to take steps to ensure your smartphone stays in top shape. However, some risk factors for your battery life are not well known, and one mistake could potentially ruin your battery life permanently.

It has become reasonably common knowledge that you should avoid subjecting your iPhone to excessive heat or cold. By now, many people are probably aware that its not a good idea to let your phone battery drop to zero before charging it.

Both of these things are very important for maintaining the health of your iPhone, but there is one risk factor that most people are unaware of, and it involves Fast Chargers.

Back in the early days of the first iPhones, Apple provided a charging plug which would delivery power to your iPhone at a steady 5 watts. Modern Apple fast chargers, however, delivery a comparatively massive 20 watts. This has to advantage of charging your phone much quicker, but does come with a hidden downside.

As TikTok tech expert Scooch pointed out, all those extra watts going into your phone means that the phone heats up a lot more. As we already know, excessive heat is bad for your battery. You might get up to 100% faster, but that charging speed will cost you in the long term.

The problem is often even worse with third-party chargers and cables. Many of these third-party chargers don’t go through the same set of vigorous safety checks as genuine Apple products, and are not precisely calibrated for what your iPhone needs. Use of these third-party products can also cause battery degradation over time.

As Scooch and other tech professionals advise, the best way to keep your iPhone running for longer is to use an Apple charger, or other Apple-certified accessories for charging your phone. It is also a good idea to use slower 5 Watt apple chargers, and provide short bursts of charge to keep it topped up over the course of the day.

The fasted way to ruin your battery is to let is go all the way to zero, then plug it in to an third-party fast charger and leave it charging all night long. Avoid doing this, and your iPhone battery can avoid becoming a spicy pillow.

Apple have made tons of announcements recently including the iPhone 16, iOS 18 and the eagerly anticipated Apple Intelligence.
