People are shocked to find out what the ‘i’ in iPhone actually stands for.
And some are even more surprised that it has any meaning behind it at all.
Apple is well known for the way it names its products - from the iPhone, to the iPad, all the way back to the iPod.

But have you ever wondered why the tech giant has an ‘i’ in front of one of its most iconic devices?
Many people have taken to social media to share their own thoughts and theories on the matter, and there have been a lot of good guesses.
Some people speculated that the ‘i’ could stand for ‘intelligent’ or ‘indispensible’, while others suggested that the ‘i’ could be in reference to the user, as if to say ‘my phone’.

Luckily for us, the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs had decided to shed some light on the mystery back in 1998 so we’ve been able to put the questions to bed.
According to Reader’s Digest, the ‘i’ stands for a few different things.
Jobs revealed that it means internet, but also means individual, instruct, inform and inspire too.
However, he did add that the ‘i’ ‘didn't have an official meaning’, adding that it could also refer to ‘i’ as a personal pronoun or ‘instruction’ for teaching Apple’s employees.

People were surprised to finally have the meaning (sort of) confirmed - with many sharing what they had thought the ‘i’ stood for.
In a TikTok and YouTube video about the topic, someone wrote: “I thought it was i for myself.”
Meanwhile, another user thought it meant ‘intelligent’.

A third person said: “i thought it was because os iOS.”
While on YouTube, one user commented: “I guess you could say, “i” didn’t know this before.”
And a fifth person added: “This is what i wondered last night when i was trying to sleep…”
Same here social media user, same here.

However, while this mystery may have been solved, it isn’t the only part of Apple products that has left customers confused.
After the first iPhone was released back in 2007, the logo on the back of the device has caught people’s eye.
So, what is the meaning behind the bitten apple?
Many have speculated it could be a reference to Adam and Eve in the Bible or the apple that fell on Isaac Newton’s head - though graphic designer Rob Janoff has claimed those suggestions are more of a ‘wonderful urban legend’.
