Apple's latest iPhone update has given users quick access to some even better camera apps with a simple trick users can carry out from their lock screen.
Apple iPhone users seem pleased enough with the capabilities of their devices since the launch of iOS 18; an update which has brought a host of new software toys for users to play with.
Many Apple apps have seen significant upgrades, such as Mail, Messages, Maps and Wallet. Those lucky enough to be equipped with one of the high-end iPhones such as the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max and any device from the iPhone 16 line can also look forward to playing with the new Apple Intelligence AI tools.

The iPhone has a great camera, but the default Photos app doesn’t always let you get the best results from it. Even after the iOS update, many would prefer to use highly-rated third-party camera apps such Halide Mk II or Moment’s Pro Camera.
The good news is that since the iOS 18 update, there is a way to put those apps on your lock screen, effectively bypassing the default Photo app entirely and enabling access to enhanced features such as manual focusing.
In order to make this possible your iPhone first needs to be updated to iOS 18. Ensure you have a compatible device, then go to Settings > General > Software Update. Once you’ve done this, install or update your preferred camera app. Halide Mk II is currently on version 2.16, and Pro Camera is up to version 5.5.

Once your apps have been installed and updated, long press on your lock screen and tap the ‘Customize’ button at the bottom of the screen. Then tap the Lock screen on the left, and the option to change your lock screen shortcuts.
Next, tap the Camera icon in the bottom right in order to remove it. After you’ve removed the Camera app, a Plus + icon will take its place. Tap this icon and a long list of possible options will be displayed. This will include apps such as Halide and Moment under the ‘Capture’ section.
Once you’ve selected your preferred camera app, select ‘Done’. Now Halide or Pro Camera Mk II will be available directly from the lock screen. No more need to unlock your phone and risk missing that perfect moment!

While the hack might help you get even better pictures, there is a cost to getting these improvements. Halide requires a subscription of either $19.99 a year, or $2.99 per month. Moment Pro Camera, meanwhile, costs $8.99.
