People freaked out after discovering ‘pure horror’ that pops up on Apple Maps near Statue of Liberty

It's sheer nightmare fuel

On the list of things you probably didn't want to see today or perhaps want to un-see, is what happens when you look a little too closely on Apple Maps.

Curious about what you'd see if you zoom in on the Statue of Liberty?

Turns out, it’s pure nightmare fuel.

One iPhone user shared their creepy discovery on Reddit: "This is what happens if you zoom in the Statue of Liberty…"

The image shows an eerie, faded face lurking in the background of the map.

They added: "When zooming in the statue of liberty, it somehow shows this creepy looking face". Have a look yourself:

People's reactions were filled with surprise and wish to unsee.

"That’s just pure horror," said one.

"Oh wow I did not need to see that," added another.

"On my iPhone in Maps app: It’s like her head is being cut open as it passes above the screen surface of your iPhone and you are seeing what’s under the surface. Wierd!" someone else wrote.

Another user tried switching to the daylight version of the map, only to be met with the same unsettling face.

Someone even made a reference to The Simpsons writing: "Looks like an alien Homer Simpson".

Many others have chimed in to say they have done the same and can 'verify' the eerie result.

Some gaming fans made reference to Rockstar's GTA IV game, writing: "Okay this is proof that the GTA IV theory about the Statue of Happiness is true."

GTA IV fans might recall the tricky easter egg that showed players an indestructible beating heart inside the game’s version of the Statue of Liberty.

The post has already racked up over 1.5k upvotes and around 60 comments after only being shared a couple of days ago.

In 2021, Apple Maps introduced this 3D map feature for users to 'explore major cities in 3D Maps users in London, Los Angeles, New York City, and San Francisco.'

It allows for 'rich detail, enhanced navigation, immersive walking directions, and more,' according to the tech giant.

The update came with the release of iOS 15, but I don't think anyone could have expected the nightmare fuel that came with famous landmarks.

Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Services, said on the back of the announcement: “Our goal has always been to build the best and most accurate map in the world. The upgrades in Apple Maps are a continuation of that effort, with features and an attention to detail that only Apple can deliver.” Though maybe too much detail!
